7 Factors of Enlightenment
Mondays, beginning June 6th, 2016
Investigation of Dharmas
Taught as the factors of a freed, awakened mind/heart
We’ll study them; though not necessarily in this order or separately. “Open” in sense of timing and progression. Various meditations, practices and exercises to fuller explicate these factors will be included.
Check back each week for talks and/or practice offerings.
June 6: The 7 Factors in general, Enlightenment, & Mindfulness
And here’s a link to the writing by Gil Fronsdal which we read and discussed. He makes interesting points about both North American Convert-Soto-Zen & Convert-Insight “takes” on enlightenment and what the two practices emphasize:
June 13: The 2nd Factor– Investigation of dharmas
“We Are Orlando”
As part of our The 7 Factors of Enlightenment series. Factor 2 is Investigation of dharmas; specifically of the 3 Marks of Existence:
- Impermanence / Change
- Not-self / Not-selfing
- Suffering / Dis-ease
A Dharma talk framing how our reactions to the shooting in Orlando on Sunday, June 12th, may cause more suffering/harm if we don’t bring awareness to our difficulties with these laws of our existence:
Here are links to the posts mentioned in the talk:
Discussions after the talk is off-line for privacy …. And, we did talk about anger as a response. While there is no one “right” answer on what to “do” about anger, I would say that caring for what we might call “the inside” (our own strong emotions and our habitual tendencies at such moments) and remembering what we might call “the outside” (the impact of any speech or behavior) both need to be remembered.
May this Dharma talk, this post, all our practices, and our interactions with each other be for the benefit of all beings.
Photos: At Civic Center in SF after we marched thru the streets from the rally in the Castro on June 12th. One of many events around the world in response.
“May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.”
June 27: The 3rd Factor — Energy / Virya
Sorry there is no Dharma talk offering this week due to technical difficulties.
We did talk more about anger and how to be and work with it’s energy; perhaps especially pertinent in these troubling times. The chapter call “Taming the Fire” from David Brazier’s The Feeling Buddha framed our discussion.
NO meeting on Monday, July 4th
July 11: The 4th Factor — Rapture/ Piti
We ran out of battery so didn’t get the talk recorder! Here’s the meditation:
July 18: The 5th Factor — Tranquility, Calm/ Passaddhi
July 25: The 6th Factor — Concentration/ Samadi
